    Moody's says it placed the "US Government Aaa bond rating and related ratings on review for possible downgrade."

    Moody's rationalized the action with reference to the increasing possiblity that the "debt limit will not be raised in time to prevent a missed payment of interest or principal on outstanding bonds and notes."

    Buried in its release, Moody's acknowledges if the US does not default on its payments "the Aaa rating would likely be confirmed" but "substantial and credible" agreement to deficit recduction must accompany any debt limit increase to avoid being placed on negative outlook.
